York Family History Society was founded in 1975, its aim being to unify people interested in family history.

The Society covers the modern archdeaconry of York and this stretches from Ledsham, Birkin, Selby and Drx in the South to Coxwold, Hovingham and Sherburn in Harfordlythe in the North.

It also covers Huggate and Bubwith in the East to Bramham, Bilton and Sherburn in Elmet in the West.

The York Assizes Index is available on the site, which is an index of prisoners brought to trial 1785-1851.

Selby and District FHG was formed in 2001 from a short Workers Education Association Family History course and experienced members give help and advice to anyone who may require it.

The group is based in Selby which is approximately 12 miles south of York and meet in Selby Town Hall.
