Central Louisiana Genealogical Society

The society preserves historical information relating to Allen, Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, Evangeline, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Rapides, Sabine, Vernon and Winn. Its aim is to gather and preserve genealogical material and to educate members regarding the correct way to conduct research.

Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month in the Alexandria Historical and Genealogical Library and begin at 2.30 pm.

They also provide access to the 1870 Population Schedule for the Parish of Rapides.  

A quarterly publication is published by the society in January, April, July and October.

Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society

The society was organised in 1953, its aims being to collect and preserve genealogical and historical material, to help members researching their family history and to discover the location of private and public records, making these publicly available.

It is possible to download a Membership Application form and the First Family Cover Letter and Application.  These are both available in PDF Format and in Word Format.

Southwest Louisiana Genealogical Society

The association was organised in 1973 with 44 members and now has over 300. Its aim is to preserve and collect genealogical material by encouraging interest in genealogy.

They publish Kinfolks, their quarterly publication, and an Index to Table of Contents covering 2008-2010 is available on the site. 

Many publications are available for sale, which include:

  • Civil War Veterans of Old Imperial Calcasieu Parish
  • Subject Indexes to Kinfolks covering 1977-2007

County and other Societies

Gulf Coast Genealogical Society

The association covers South East Louisiana and Mississippi.  Its aims are to promote interest in genealogy, to show people where genealogical records are available, to tell people about the importance of preserving records of a genealogical nature and to preserve and publish genealogical records of interest to those studying genealogy.

An extensive collection of resources is currently accessible at Elaine P. Nunez Community College in Chalmette and in the future will be at Nunez Community College Library located at 3710 Paris Rd, Chalmette. 

They publish L’Heritage, their newsletter, but unfortunately all back issues were destroyed in the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Imperial St. Landry Genealogical and Historical Society

Some resources are available on their site, which include the Opelousas Telephone Directory for 1922, Ancestor Chart Template and the first part of 1930 St. Landry Parish Census.  Some photographs are also available.

Lafayette Genealogical Society

The society covers the Attakapa Region, which is in Cajun County.

If you require help with your research, volunteers meet on the 1st Saturday of every month in Lafayette Public Library in order to give assistance.

Natchitoches Genealogical and Historical Association

The association has an extensive collection of resources that are accessible in their Library which is located at Old Natchitoches Parish Courthouse on the Second Floor. 

These resources incorporate:

New Orleans Genealogical Research Society

The association was established in 1960.  They publish New Orleans Genesis, which is their quarterly publication. 

You can search for articles of interest in this publication and a Table of Contents for Newsletter Number 190 dated April 2010 is accessible on the site. 

Back Issues for newsletters are available for sale, but some are out-of-print.  A list of surnames currently being researched by members is also available.

St. Tammany Parish Genealogical Society

Terrebonne Genealogical Society

The association publishes a newsletter and it is possible to download back issues of this publication on their site from 1997-2012.

The association was established in 1982.  Their journal, Mississippi River Routes, is published quarterly and a Table Contents relating to the current issue is available on their site.  Back Issues of the publication are also available for sale, and a Table of Contents for each issue from 1993 is available on the site.

Winn Parish Genealogical and Historical Association

The association was established in 1996.  An extensive collection of books are accessible in their library. These include books relating to some US States, Overseas and Immigration Records.  Books also relate to the U. S. Military, Native Americans, Ship Passenger Lists and Surnames. 

A Mailing List for Members hosted by Rootsweb and a Legacies and Legends index which is an index to articles in Legacies and Legends, their journal, is also available.  Articles include:
